The 1-Ingredient Upgrade for Better Meatloaf

Meatloaf is one of those classic comfort foods that many people cherish. Whether it's served with mashed potatoes, gravy, or alongside a hearty vegetable medley, meatloaf is a dish that tends to please everyone at the dinner table.

However, while traditional meatloaf recipes can be tasty, they often lack that extra something to make them truly unforgettable. Fortunately, there's an easy 1-ingredient upgrade that can elevate your meatloaf to a whole new level of flavor: sour cream

Sour cream is a versatile ingredient that can be used to improve a wide variety of dishes, and meatloaf is no exception. When incorporated into the mix, sour cream adds richness and moisture, transforming a potentially dry meatloaf into something much juicier and tender.

This is especially beneficial if you're using leaner cuts of meat, like ground turkey or chicken, which tend to dry out more easily during cooking.

One of the key factors that make sour cream work so well is its fat content. Fat plays a crucial role in maintaining moisture, flavor, and texture in meatloaf. While eggs, breadcrumbs, and other traditional binders help hold the meat mixture together, sour cream provides the necessary fat to keep everything juicy.

Adding sour cream to your meatloaf recipe couldn't be easier. Typically, you would replace some or all of the milk or other liquid ingredients with sour cream.

For a standard meatloaf recipe, you can use about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of sour cream, depending on how moist you like your meatloaf. You can also experiment by replacing some of the eggs with sour cream for an even creamier texture.

Simply mix the sour cream into the ground meat along with your other ingredients—such as breadcrumbs, onions, garlic, and spices. You can also add a little extra sour cream on top of the meatloaf before baking to create a velvety, golden-brown crust that adds even more flavor.
