I Went Keto for 30 Days—Here’s What Happened to My Skin.

Deciding to try the ketogenic (keto) diet for 30 days was a bold choice, especially with the promise of benefits like weight loss and more energy. But what I didn’t expect was how drastically it would affect my skin.

The keto diet, which is high in healthy fats and low in carbs, aims to get your body into a state of ketosis, where it burns fat for energy instead of carbs. Here’s what happened to my skin during my 30-day keto experiment.

The first few days were rough. As my body adjusted to the lack of carbs, I noticed my skin became drier than usual.

Dehydration is a common side effect of the keto diet because it causes your body to lose a lot of water, and that water loss impacted my skin. My complexion also broke out in a few places—likely due to the sudden shift in my diet and insulin levels.

By the second week, things started to balance out. My skin became oilier, especially around my T-zone.

The increase in healthy fats—like avocado, olive oil, and coconut oil—seemed to trigger my skin to produce more oil, which helped keep the dryness at bay. While oilier skin can sometimes mean more acne .

As I hit the three-week mark, my skin began to look healthier overall. The oiliness had subsided, and my skin had a noticeable glow.

My complexion looked more even, and the redness around my cheeks and chin diminished. It felt like the keto diet was detoxifying my skin, leaving it clearer and more hydrated.
