Frozen Custard vs. Gelato and Other Frozen Desserts: What Makes It Unique.

Frozen custard is often compared to other frozen treats like gelato, ice cream, and sorbet, but it stands out for its unique qualities that elevate it to a different level of indulgence. 

With its rich texture, smooth consistency, and decadent flavor, frozen custard offers a one-of-a-kind experience. Let’s explore what makes frozen custard distinct from other popular frozen desserts. 

The defining characteristic of frozen custard is its inclusion of egg yolks. These egg yolks give frozen custard its rich, velvety texture that’s denser and smoother than traditional ice cream.  

In contrast, gelato doesn’t use egg yolks and typically relies on more milk and less cream, giving it a smoother, but less rich, mouthfeel. 

Frozen custard is churned at a slower rate than ice cream, incorporating less air into the mixture. This process, known as overrun, results in a dense and smooth texture that feels rich on the tongue. 

Gelato also has little overrun but is slightly more compact than frozen custard due to its higher proportion of milk. Ice cream, by comparison, contains more air, which results in a lighter, fluffier texture.  

Because of the higher fat content from cream and the richness from egg yolks, frozen custard is known for its deep, creamy flavor. Gelato, with its milk-heavy base, offers a more concentrated, less fatty taste that often highlights specific flavors like chocolate or fruit. 

Ice cream generally has a balanced sweetness, but its lighter texture may not provide the same indulgent richness that frozen custard delivers.
