From Zesty to Dried: How to Make Citrus Last Longer.
Citrus fruits, with their bright and zesty flavor, are a popular addition to many dishes, drinks, and snacks.
However, if you have an abundance of citrus or simply want to extend their shelf life, drying them is a fantastic option.
Dried citrus can be used in a variety of ways, from snacking to adding a burst of flavor to teas, salads, or baked goods. Here’s how to dry citrus fruits to make them last longer.
Choose Your CitrusYou can dry almost any type of citrus, including oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits. Choose ripe, firm fruits that are free from blemishes or bruises for the best results.
Slice the FruitWash the citrus thoroughly and slice it into thin, even slices. The thinner the slices, the faster they will dry and the better the texture will be. Aim for about 1/4-inch thick slices.
Drying MethodsThere are several ways to dry citrus slices: you can use a food dehydrator, an oven, or even air dry them if you’re in a warm, dry climate.
For a dehydrator, set the temperature to around 135°F and dry the slices for 6-8 hours. In the oven, set it to the lowest setting and place the slices on a baking sheet for 3-4 hours.
Store the Dried CitrusOnce your citrus is fully dried and crisp, store it in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Dried citrus can last for months and add a flavorful touch to a variety of dishes.
